I was seven years old when I first understood what leadership looked like. We were gathered around the dinner table, plates still warm, when my dad mentioned he needed to see a customer that evening. He was tired—anyone could see it. But instead of asking one of his employees to go, he decided he’d make the trip himself so they could stay home with their families.
At that age, I didn’t have words for it. I just watched him push back his chair, grab his coat, and head into the night. But the lesson stuck: leading a business meant putting others first.
Thirty years later, that memory came rushing back when I decided to start Van Wyk Insurance Agency. On paper, it didn’t make much sense—I’d never sold a policy, had no experience running a company, and only the thinnest outline of a business plan. At the same time, Carol and I were raising three young kids. The safer choice would’ve been to stay where I was.
But I couldn’t shake the pull to build something different. I wanted a company rooted in service, not just sales. So, with a lot of faith and not much else, we opened the doors in 1982.
The early years were a blur of long days and late nights, but I found purpose in the work. Every client we helped, every relationship we built, confirmed what I’d learned at that dinner table—that business isn’t about transactions. It’s about trust.
